James “Jim” M. Kavanaugh, 60, Rockford, died Saturday, May, 5 at Swedish American Hospital with family by his side.

He worked for the University of Illinois at Rockford for 34 years in the IT Department.

He was born, April 30, 1952, in Detroit, Mich., the son of James J. and Joyce (Geisert) Kavanaugh.

He married Karen Scherer on Aug. 28, 1976 in Polo,

Survivors include his wife, Karen; father, James; sisters, Mary Kavanaugh, Elgin, Kathy (Frank) Saaijenga, Polo; brothers Patrick (Kirsten) Kavanaugh, Dixon, Daniel (Candice) Kavanaugh, Carmel, Ind., Kevin (Yen) Kavanaugh, California, Michael (Julie) Kavanaugh, Polo, Timothy (Sue) Kavanaugh, Dixon; and many nieces and nephews (too many to count).

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

The funeral will held on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Polo Family Funeral Home, Polo.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Polo, immediately following the service.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Polo Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Hospital.
