A light morning drizzle didn't stop 70 participants from kicking off Sunday's Oregon Trail Days events.

The day began with the 8K Run-A-Muck when people ran from Castle Rock State Park to Oregon Park East. They then had the option of returning to the state park by floating down the Rock River.

“It was very nice; a little rainy, but nice and easy,” said runner Kim Basler, Oregon.

Sunday’s morning drizzle didn’t stop the runners from running, but the overall lack of rainfall contributed to the lack of people who chose to ride inner tubes or canoes on the Rock River.

“I wish the river was higher to float on,” said Basler.

The Lions Cub also held a pancake breakfast at Park East in the morning in conjunction with their annual canoe rally.

“We’re very successful, especially considering the rain,” said Lions Club member Tom Champley.

The money earned will benefit the Lions Club.

The Chana School also hosted a quilt show and games for children including a watermelon eating contest.

“This is the first time we've ever done the Sunday kid's events,” said Oregon Trail Days committee member Donna Mann.

Visitors could tour the Chana School and view an exhibit of vintage quilts or browse the vendors and watch entertainment outside.

“I think we've had a really good year,” said Mann.

Volunteers helped the festival run smoothly throughout the weekend.

“We're very pleased we've got so many of our young people involved,” said Mann.

Oregon High School's Key Club and Servent Leadership members helped at Lowden Park Saturday, while members of the Oregon High School volleyball program ran Pioneer Games for children at the Chana School.

Head volleyball coach Christy Sitze commented on her player’s volunteer work.

“You get to see the best come out of the people in the program,” said Sitze.  “It really helps build character for them not only to be good teammates but good community members.”
