John L. Leary

John L. Leary, 89,  lifelong Oregon resident, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at his home.

He was born April 14, 1923 in Jesup, Iowa, the son of George and Rose (Schmidt) Leary.

John was a 1941 graduate of Oregon High School and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in World War II. He married Mary Sauer February 28, 1946; she died Sept. 19, 1949.

He then married Mary Shaffner May 19, 1950. He was a dairy farmer in rural Oregon for 50 years, 1948-1998.

John was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon, Rochelle VFW Post #3878 and Illinois VFW District 6 Commander 1987-1988.

He served on the Oregon School Board for 17 years and the Ogle County Board for 20 years and was known to his wife as John “Meetings” Leary.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, Oregon; daughter, Susan (Rob) Osborne, Oregon; sons: Tim (Kathy) Leary, Oregon, Mike Leary, Daly City, Calif., and Steve (Zina) Leary,Oregon; son-in-law, Butch (Bonnie) Blumeyer, Oregon; grandchildren: Celeste Lyles, Vanessa Ankey, T.J. Leary, Mark Leary, Stacey Glendenning and Cassidy Speaker; 11 great-grandchildren;  brother, Donald (Angela) Leary, Oregon; and brother-in-law, Charles Shaffner, Oregon. He was also preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Nancy Ann; daughter, Kathleen Blumeyer; grandson, Joshua Blumeyer; and sisters, Evelyn Fruin and Vera Mattison.

Funeral mass was scheduled for Wednesday Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon, with Rev. Joseph Naill, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Oregon, with military honors.

Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20 fro 5 to 7 p.m. at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, with a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials may be made to Serenity Hospice and Home of Oregon, St. Mary Catholic Church, or Rochelle VFW Post 3878.
