Man is arrested for murdering his wife after her body was found in the river
The husband of a Machesney Park woman whose body was found in the Rock River near Byron was charged with her murder last week.
Winnebago County Sheriff's Police arrested Todd Smith, 45, on Nov. 21 on four counts of first degree murder and one count of concealing a homicidal death in the death of his wife Katrina Smith, 30.
He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail in lieu of $4 million bond. His first court appearance was Nov. 24.
Katrina Smith was reportedly last seen alive on Oct. 22. Todd Smith reported her missing the next day.
Her body was discovered Nov. 9 in the Rock River about a mile south of Byron.
An off-duty Byron firefighter, who was fishing in that area, spotted the body, caught on a large log and mostly submerged in the water several yards from the shoreline.
Winnebago County detectives said an autopsy performed Nov. 10 showed that Smith died from blunt force trauma.
