Mary Jean Gipe

Mary Jean Gipe, 78, Pecatonica, died at 1:25 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, 2014 in Neighbors Nursing Home, Byron.

She was born Dec. 25, 1935 in Big Stone City, S.D., the daughter of Raymond W. and Irene S. (Fenner) Kalas.

She married Walter S. “Red” Gipe in Polo, on May 15, 1954.

She was a member of Pecatonica United Methodist Church and Ladies Legion Auxiliary. Former Winnebago County election judge for over 20 years.

She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, dancing and cheering for her children and grandchildren at sporting events.

She graduated from Polo High School in the Class of 1953.

Survivors include sons, Don (Kim) Gipe and Tom (Pat) Gipe, both of Pecatonica, and Tim (Dina) Gipe, Sandwich; grandchildren, Jordyn Gipe, Melissa (fiancé Josh Fransen) Gipe, Angela (Cody) Clagg, Andrea Espinoza, Aaron (Amanda) Gipe, Janelle (Brooke) Gipe, Brittany (Steven) Kewatt, Quentin (Erica) Gipe, Nolan, Anna, and Andrew Gipe; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Luanne) Kalas, San Benito, Texas; sister-in-law, Evelyn Kalas, Dixon; brother-in-law, Lyle Summers, Wyanet; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Jerry (Gipper); brother Robert Kalas; and sister, Joan Summers.

Funeral ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at Pecatonica United Methodist Church, 528 Washington, Pecatonica, with Reverend Katie Voigt officiating.  Cremation rites will be accorded.

Visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home-Countryman Chapel, 529 Washington, Pecatonica, on Monday, June 30 from 4 to 8 p.m.
